Treble Clusters In Patchwork Crochet

Treble Clusters in patchwork crochet is definitely my ‘go to’ stitch when doing this type of project.

A treble cluster adequately covers the base of the blanket stitch whilst not creating to many stitches on the top.

Treble clusters are essentially partially completed stitches, combined to create one stitch.

When you create a treble cluster you can choose to do either a 2 treble cluster or a 3 treble cluster. You can also choose to insert a chain in between each cluster.

2 Treble clusters work well with thicker yarns whilst 3 treble clusters are used for lace weight yarns or crochet cottons.

Steps to create beautiful treble clusters:

For 2 treble clusters:

    • Yarn over, insert the hook into the space, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops,
    • 2 loops are left on the hook. Yarn over, insert the hook into the same space, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops are then left on the hook), yarn over and pull through all 3 loops
    • For 3 treble clusters:
      • Yarn over, insert the hook into the space, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops,
      • 2 loops are left on the hook. Yarn over, insert the hook into the same space, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops
      • 3 loops are left on the hook. Yarn over, insert the hook into the same space, pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops (4 loops are then left on the hook), yarn over and pull through all 4 loops

You can insert a single chain in between each cluster but be sure that your work does not frill. If your work does frill it would mean you have to many stitches squashed into an area. It would then be best for you to eliminate the chains altogether.

When you do clusters into a corner space, you have to include 2 or 3 chains inbetween the clusters in the corner. For example, you could stitch  2 x two treble clusters, 3 chains, 2 x two treble clusters into each corner space.

Treble Clusters in Patchwork Crochet

In patchwork crochet the first row of treble clusters is completed under the loops of the blanket stitch. The second row of treble clusters are completed in the tops of the clusters of the previous row

In the example above, lace weight yarn was used.
